UPDATE: Woman Struck, Killed by Train in Syosset

LIRR says victim was struck at Robbins Lane crossing; service expected to be normal this morning.

An unidentified woman was struck and killed along the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road near the Robbins Lane crossing in Syosset Wednesday afternoon, the railroad said.

The woman was struck by a "non-passenger" train and killed, although the type of train is not clear. Significant delays were reported on the Port Jefferson line following the late afternoon incident, authorities said.

A Long Island Rail Road spokesman told Newsday that the incident took place about 4:30 p.m. and involved a westbound Huntington-Port Jefferson branch non-passenger train. The gates were down at the time of the crash, Newsday reported.

There have been a string of similar incidents along the LIRR's main line this year.

The Ronkonkoma branch is not impacted by the incident. The two branches split just east of Hicksville station. A freight line shares the use of the LIRR tracks.
