WABC Accuweather Forum Held in Farmingdale

Meteorologists stress plans and preperation as best defense against severe weather

WABC 7's meteorology team held the first Accuweather Forum on Long Island  Thursday at Republic Airport in Farmingdale.

Meteorologists Bill Evens, Lee Goldberg, Jeff Smith, and Amy Freeze answered audience questions and discussed weather topics and trends on Long Island. Public officials and emergency management experts attended the event and urged residents to be prepared and have a plan in place for weather emergencies and severe storms.

Several topics came up from hurricanes and tornados to snowstorms and floods. One of the most interesting questions of the night was about the advances in weather radar technology and in increase in tornado warnings in our area, which the meteorologist attributed to advances in weather monitoring allowing them to detect tornados and tornado conditions.

No matter how advanced the weather monitoring equipment gets, the meteorologists say there will always be a degree of unpredictability, that’s why it’s always important to have a plan and be prepared for anything before severe weather hits.
