Nassau County Opens Cooling Centers

Nassau County is opening cooling centers as of Wednesday and for the rest of the week because of the extreme heat predicted across Long Island.

Not all the sites are open the same days or hours. In the Town of Oyster Bay, the county will open the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Long Island, with temperatures expected to hit the low to mid 90s on Thursday and climb higher on Friday.

"The combination of heat and humidity can become unbearable and dangerous for many of our residents, and the county is doing all it can to provide some relief," said County Executive Edward P. Mangano. "I encourage everyone to take precautions to stay as cool as possible."

The Hicksville center is at 28 Carl St.,  (516) 797-7900, and will be open Thursday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
