North Hempstead Won’t Be Broadcasting Meetings

Town board votes down measure to stream meetings online or broadcast on town channel.

The Town of North Hempstead board voted against having meetings televised on the Town's channel or be streamed live online.

The vote was 4-2 with Councilman Thomas Dwyer not in attendance against televising meetings. Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio, R-Port Washington, who proposed this measure and Councilman Angelo Ferrara, R-New Hyde Park, both voted for televising meetings.

The Town of Brookhaven televises its meetings as does the Village of Mineola. Supervisor Jon Kaiman pointed out that streaming or taping the town meetings might not be as easy as it looks.

"Just because other people don't do it isn't a reason not to do it," DeGiorgio said.

DeGiorgio also added that broadcasting meetings would increase transparency.

Eric Zausner voiced his support for televising meetings during the town board meeting, calling it a "big leap forward."

Councilwoman Viviana Russell, D-Westbury, said before voting against the measure that she reached out to Brookhaven to get more information but didn't hear back from them and voted no based on not having enough information.

In case you are unaware... the Town's budget is online. You can request any budget information from the Town. Nothing in the budget is private. It's all public information. As far as the meetings being televised... what's the point? The meetings are open to the public and everyone is given the right to speak about every matter at the meetings. It's not closed and everyone gets the opportunity to partake in discussion. Whether they chose to do so or not is up to them. Hearing people complain about government all the time for every little thing is getting old when there is no basis for the complaints. Go to the meetings if you are so interested. Do you want to pay the costs for televising the meetings? Because I sure don't! Guess what... it's not going to be free. The money has to come from somewhere!

Budget is not "books", but that said, little joey has yet to true up his wild and libelous claims and accusations. Perhaps he ought to be given a "time out" or even a red card?
