TOBAY Beach Dune Planting Set for Saturday

This rain-or-shine event is fun and helps protect the dunes that protect the beach.

Hundreds of volunteers are expected to turn out for the 's 23rd annual this Saturday.

Town officials, workers and community volunteers will meet at the Tobay Beach Ocean Pavilion at 10 a.m. Saturday for the annual planting of dune grass along the town's ocean-front beach.

Last year, turned out to carefully plant plugs of dune grass…230,000 last year alone, town officials said.

Volunteers can also sample some of the best clam chowder in town, along with coffee, hot chocolate and donuts. All of it is donated by local companies.

The rain-or-shine event needs volunteers. The beach is located off Ocean Parkway, just east of Jones Beach.

Ocean Parkway is easily accessible from the Wantagh Parkway. Follow the traffic circle around the Jones Beach water tower.

What a great way to kick off the spring season. A day at the beach planting stalks of dune grass. If you keep track of the location of your plantings you can go back during the warm summer season and see how your plantings have done. The Town of Oyster Bay supplies its resident volunteers with the small hand shovels and the plants. We supply the labor. Wear appropriate attire for walking, kneeling and sitting on beach sand in the dunes. Bring your camera and take plenty of pictures...bring your family and you will undoubtedly see friends and neighbors there. The restroom facilites are open for our convenience. Volunteers can enjoy the free hot chocolate, chowder, and donuts donated by businesses operating within the Town of Oyster Bay border. See you at the beach!

The largest turn out to date...over 1,200 volunteers showed up and planted 230,000 stalks of American beach grass. Nice on the spot reporting and interviews in Newsday.com or the Sunday paper by Sarah Crichton and even has a photo. http://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/kids-help-shore-up-dunes-at-tobay-beach-1.3621609

My buddy and I got there just before 10 and were surprised by so many already planting. We each put in seven bundles and since we surfcast there, are curious to see how the grass thrives. Very impressed with our fellow TOBAYers efforts and bemused that the town must have cleaned the beach prior, as it was pretty littered up back in early December. Kudos to the town for organizing still another well run event. Anyone want to trade a Medium for the Xtra Large I was stuck with ?

We're planning a follow-up story on this with more photos. This is a great annual event. If you have photos of your family involved in the dune planting, send them to us.
