VIDEO: Village Considers New Water Authority
The Village of Farmingdale may hand over control of their water supply.
For two years, the Village of Farmingdale has been shopping around for an outside source to help run their private water supply. Mayor George Starkie presented the options and his preference of the Suffolk County Water Authority at the December board meeting.
According to the mayor, perks of shifting control to the Suffolk County Water Authority include:
- $4 million worth of updated water technology
- Any rehabilitation needed will not be paid for by residents
- Village's highest-rate tier would save 30 percent on their water bills.
- Residents will be charged $1.52 for every 1,000 gallons of water
- If a Farmingdale well goes down, back up can come from East Farmingdale
- A $60 million budget for maintenance
The deal requires legislation from Albany to happen and if it goes through, Farmingdale will be the first Nassau County municipality to work with the Suffolk Authority.

Starkie will now continue pursuing the legislation to enter into an agreement with Suffolk County Water Authority over the upcoming months and public hearings will be scheduled.
