Weigh in on Gun Crimes

The tragedy in Colorado this weekend made us wonder how concerned you are about guns crime.

Most of us woke up Friday morning to the terrible news that 12 people had been shot and killed in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

It was a tragedy that caused many to remember the another mass shooting in the same state at Columbine High School in 1999.

The  events in Colorado have renewed the national debate about gun crimes, and we want to get your thoughts about how concerned you are here in Farmingdale. Do you worry about becoming a target?

Do you think an armed individual in the crowd could have taken the gunman down?

I do believe there should be more control with assault rifles. That being said, I also believe stronly in the 2nd ammendment and our right to bear arms. Yes I do believe an armed person could have taken him down before this monster started taking human lives like he was at an arcade. Maybe, if more people carried, people like would think twice before going on these rampages. I do believe an armed society is a polite society. In my opinion there would be less crime if criminals had to worry about getting shot or killed while comitting a crime against someones person or property. Thomas Jefferson and our founding fathers were brilliant men with amazing foresite: "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. -Jefferson’s “Commonplace Book,” 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764"

I have one additional comment on this subject. Had there been one armed person (who had a permit to carry) in the theatre that night, and was able to shoot this animal dead before he could finish his assault on the innocents involved, I'll bet my house he would be hailed as a hero from coast to coast!
