Farmingdale Senior Earns Prestigious Scholarship

Professional Communications major is Farmingdale State's first winner in more than 10 years

A senior at Farmingdale State College was recently awarded one of four undergraduate scholarships given out by the the United University Professionals for the State University of New York system.

Sarina Turbendian is the first student from Farmingdale State College to receive this scholarship in more than 10 years.

The scholarship, one of four that were awarded this year, recognizes undergraduate students for both academic excellence and social or community service. In addition to an excellent grade point average, Turbendian has been an active member of Golden Key International Honour Society for several years, winning one of their chapter scholarships at the 2013 New Member Induction and serving as Co-President of the club for her senior year.

Turbendian, who lives in Farmingdale, has also been an active member in the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF-YOARF) since the age of 14.

She currently serves as secretary and a member of their Executive Board, and has set up fundraisers, participated in rallies, and given speeches at the 97th and 98th anniversary commemorations of the Armenian Genocide, all to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Armenian community.

“My goals in life are to build on my experience in the AYF-YOARF and become a successful leader of humanitarian projects,” Turbendian said.

“We will always be proud of Sarina's accomplishments and her fine work at Farmingdale State College," said Turbendian’s Farmingdale advisor, Professor Vicki Janik. "We are also very pleased that UUP has given her so important an honor that she clearly deserves.”

Turbendian, who is majoring in Professional Communications with an anticipated graduation date in May of 2014, hopes to continue her studies with a master’s degree in literature, and then pursue a career in literature and publishing.

“I believe that art elicits change,” she says, “and I want to scout for books and find stories that bring people together in the hope of bettering the world.”
