Free Tax Help, New Scholarships, Student Politics

A weekly summary of the activities on the campus of Farmingdale State College.

Free Income Tax Preparation Assistance on Campus:
As of Tuesday, there was one month until April 15, the date which income tax filings are due. Those still needing to file may be eligible to receive free assistance on the campus of .  The Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income individuals or families, who generally earn below $49,000 a year.  The program is being offered on Tuesdays through April 7 in Whitman Hall, Room 215, from 10 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. If you are going to take advantage of this program, make sure to bring photo ID, Social Security cards, income statements, bank account info and last year's federal and state tax returns.

Dominic A. Murray Scholarship:
A scholarship has been established for Farmingdale State College students in memory of , a 17 year old basketball player who collapsed and died after having sudden cardiac arrest while playing a basketball game at Farmingdale State College. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who composes the winning essay or video essay working to raise awareness for the condition of sudden cardiac arrest.

Social Science Essay Contest:
The Social Science Research Center of Farmingdale State College is holding an essay contest on the subject of drunk driving and the implications of technology on today's society. Students should compose an essay between 1500 and 2000 words on those topics, and submit it by the deadline of April 14.

Demystifying the Graduate School Progress:
Those students contemplating a graduate degree may find it helpful to attend a workshop being held by Dolores Ciaccio, director of the Career Development Center at Farmingdale State College. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 22 at 11 a.m. in Gleeson Hall room 225.  The event is being sponsored by the Golden Key International Honor Society, however it is not restricted to members of the society. All students are welcome to attend.

Town Hall Meeting to Be Held March 24:
President Keen will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, March 24 at 11 a.m. in the Roosevelt Hall Little Theater. President Keen will be giving a presentation to discuss the future campus plans and proposed fee increases. Students will have the chance to ask questions about the proposed changes.  Proposed is a roughly 10 percent increase in the comprehensive fee, as well as small but still significant increases in the fees for various other services, including intercollegiate athletics and health services.

Technology Job Fair:
Mentioned previously, the College will be holding a job fair specifically tailored to technology and IT students and alumni on Thursday, March 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Roosevelt Hall Multi-Purpose Room. The Career Development Center advises candidates to “dress to interview.” A list of companies participating will be attached to this article. The career fair is open to all, and is free of charge.

Reminder: V-Day and Vagina Monologues:
Also discussed earlier was the upcoming V-Day commemoration and production of the Vagina Monologues on campus. The production will be preformed next week. Refer to for more specifics.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow:
Gas vouchers being offered by the Farmingdale Student Government have officially sold out, according to the  Axillary Service Corporation. Will the FSG renew the program? Your guess is as good as ours. But check back here for more details if and when they emerge.
