New Major, Professor Honored, Spring Break

A weekly rundown of happenings from the campus of Farmingdale State College.

has announced the formation of a new telecommunications bachelors of science program.  The program, which will be offered through the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering Technology, aims to prepare students for careers in such fields as broadband and wireless networking and traditional telephony infrastructure networking.  This new major seeks to develop students in a field of study that is hoped to bring many jobs in the new future.   

“Telecommunications professionals will be in high demand as the field is expected to experience significant growth over the next years,” said Socrates Thanasas, chairman of the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering Technology.

The addition of the new major will now bring the number of majors that Farmingdale State offers to 37.  The program is currently accepting students for, and will begin instruction this Fall.  An information sheet about the new major is in the gallery.

FSC Professor Honored for Optics Research:
Dr. M. Nazrul Islam, a professor in the Security Systems department at Farmingdale State College will receive a senior membership position to the SPIE, the International Society of Optics and Photonics.  Dr. Islam is receiving this honor in part for his research into facial and optical recognition technology used to fight crime. The SPIE is an organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies.  Dr. Islam will go on to become the 72nd Senior Member of SPIE, a distinction that was created in 2008.

Health and Wellness Fair On Campus:
The Health and Wellness Center, in association with the Nursing Department will hold a Fair promoting Health and Wellness on Tuesday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Roosevelt Hall Multipurpose Room.  Various demonstrations and free services and products will be held and given out at the fair, including information about tea gardens, demonstrations of massage therapy, smoking cessation products, demonstrations of Reiki, acupuncture, and hypnosis and also blood pressure testing.  For more information, call 631-420-2552 or 631-420-2690.

Spring Break:
As if any reminder were needed for students, classes at Farmingdale State College will not take place from Monday, April 18 through Sunday, April 24.  During that time, some offices will remain open on certain days where a religious observation is not taking place.  Those needing to engage in any business with these offices are strongly urged to contact that office prior to assure that it will be in operation.  

Job Fair:
On Thursday, April 28, Farmingdale State College will hold its Spring Career fair. The event will take place in the Roosevelt Hall Multipurpose Room from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  A list of participants should be available shortly, and will be posted on the homepage of the college.  Attendees are advised to dress to interview, and come prepared with updated resumes.
