School Notebook: Apples, Survey, Halloween

Kindergarteners at Albany Avenue Elementary School celebrated the 237th birthday of Johnny Appleseed. The students learned that he was originally known as John Chapman and earned his "Appleseed" last name because of his love for growing apple trees and for his kind ways and his leadership in conservation.

Reminders:

  • Halloween Fest at Albany Avenue is on Friday on the back field from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Kids will be dressed in their costumes and there will be games pumpkin decorating, music, and a bbq donated by Chili’s of Farmingdale.
  • The PTA Kids Stuff fundraiser ends Oct. 28.

Farmingdale High School students Chris Brandimarte, Brett Davies and Sean Mohan are helping the Concerned Citizens Association of Farmingdale determine what students want at the vacant Liberty Site in Farmingdale.

The three students weighed in on the now cleaned up EPA Superfund site at a recent CCAF meeting and said they were in favor of keeping a suburban feel, not wanting to "see Farmingdale turning into the city," but that it was important to them that the site was not just ball fields.

CCAF president Gosline explained said that the YMCA may be interested in helping the Town of Oyster Bay build an intergenerational community center there. The students are conducting a survey about the use of the space and asking for community input. The survey will be available on Patch later this week.


The elementary schools and the high school are also hosting parades on the day of Halloween.The parade at starts at 9:15 a.m., the parades at and elementary schools start at 9:30 a.m. and the parades from and elementary schools start at 1 p.m.
