Boys Soccer: Farmingdale 2011 Preview

The Dalers have started their season with a 1-1-0 overall record.

The Farmingdale boys soccer team played their way to the Nassau County AA finals in 2010, but a dramatic game that saw them and rival Massapequa come down to penalty kicks had the Dalers on the short end.

Farmingdale finished as runner-ups that time around, but they have a wealth of returning as well as up-and-coming players to look forward to in 2011. With a 10-3-5 overall record and a co-conference championship last season, the Dalers look to provide heavy competition in a deep Conference I.

“Coming into the season, I knew we lost a lot, but knew we had a lot of talent spread out coming up as well,” said Farmingdale head coach Brandon Oppenheim. “We got a big bench, but I have guys that come in right away and do the job.”

Top Players:

  • Edis Canales, junior, midfielder
  • Fernando Cortez, sophomore, midfielder
  • Harrison Rosen, senior, goalkeeper

Position Breakdown: Farmingdale graduated a total of 15 seniors from last year's team, including key forwards and the entire starting defensive back line. Lead forward Victor Montano, as well as defenders Micael Doeller and Michael Giordano, are amongst the group whom will need replacing in 2011.

The players to do just that start with center midfielders Edis Canales and Fernando Cortez, who will play with Steven Fishman and Dennis Bocanegra.

“Our middle is really solid with two of the best players you are going to see that work together in a while,” said Oppenheim. “I see good things and am pleasantly surprised.”

Key forwards up front include Chris Hasemann and Nader Golshahr. The new-look defense will be bolstered by Luis Villamil and Nick Drovetta, as well as returning starting goalkeeper Harrison Rosen.

Expectations: Farmingdale has started this season with an overall 1-1-0 record and are expected to compete for another Conference title and possibly the County championship with Massapequa, Oceanside, Freeport, Hempstead, Syosset and Uniondale.

“I expect some really good things to come once we get rolling this season,” said Oppenheim.

The Dalers started the season with a 2-1 win on the road over Bellmore Kennedy last Saturday with goals from Bocanegra and Golshahr.

On Tuesday, the team played their home-opener against Freeport, but fell short by a 1-0 score after Red Devils’ forward Osman Manzanares sent a ball past Rosen in the 61st minute to break the scoreless tie.

Farmingdale struggled to find many opportunities against a tough Freeport midfield and defense, putting just three shots on target. Rosen finished with six saves for the Dalers.
