Daler Basketball Loses to Hempstead, 61-47

Dalers started slow and couldn't keep up with Hempstead.

After an exhausting game Tuesday night, the boys basketball team lost to Hempstead 61-47. Hempstead proved their superior speed and agility on the court, in addition to displaying their defensive abilities to the packed gym.

The Dalers’ first quarter got off to a slow start, with many over-thrown passes to teammates while Hempstead started strong, with multiple three-point baskets. The first quarter belonged to # 22, Tywan Watson, who helped his Hempstead team gain the lead with three of those three-pointers.

Watson of Hempstead continued his three-point prowess in the second quarter with another three-pointer, while the Dalers, particularly #33, Matt DiCarlo and #20, Kevin Petit-Frere, earned points through foul shots. When Farmingdale sophomore Navreet Dhaliwal entered the game, things began to look up for the Dalers. He stole the ball from Hempstead, sprinted down the court and earned two points for his team. Following Dhaliwal, teammate Dalique Mingo, earned another two points. and Kevin Petit-Frere hit a crisp three-pointer. Farmingdale was closing the gap at the end of the second quarter with only a 10-point difference.

Daler star, Mingo, began the third quarter with a basket and then stole the ball from Hempstead and sped down the court for a successful three-pointer. Freshman Daler, Jack Burke, joined the game, displaying his speed and skills, stopped the ball from Hempstead and assisted Mingo with a basket. However, Hempstead continued to pressure Farmingdale in the third quarter by improving their passing and teamwork.

The final quarter began with Hempstead star, Mical Boyd, who made a successful basket after receiving the ball across the length of the court. Despite trailing throughout the game, the Daler defense greatly improved during the final four minutes. Optimistic Farmingdale parents praised the team's efforts and remarked “we still have a lot more games in the season.”

Heroes: Stephen Ricketts of Hempstead scored 18 points during the game, followed by Mical Boyd with 12 and Tidell Pierre with 11. However, Dalique Mingo earned an impressive 17 points and Kevin Petit-Frere scored 12 points for the Dalers.

Quotable: “I’m disappointed,” said Farmingdale head coach Jim Pastier. “We rebounded a little, but did not have many threes.” Pastier, however, said he was proud of the boys’ defense.

Bottom Line: Farmingdale needs to gain control of their throws and work on their passes. Hempstead was a difficult team, but Farmingdale could surely prove to be a tough competitor later in the season.

Key Stat: Mingo led the Dalers in scoring. He scored 17 points, followed by Petit-Frere with 12.
