Farmingdale Softball Loses Game 2 to East Meadow

Dalers play for the Nassau Class AA softball title on Thursday.

East Meadow softball topped Farmingdale 5-1 to even up the Nassau County Class AA Championship at one game apiece on Tuesday.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, it was East Meadow's Madison West, a freshman who was moved up in the order for Tuesday's game, that got the big knock. West clubbed an opposite-field two-run homer that put the Jets up for good.

"It felt great," West said of the homer. "I am just happy I could help my team win."

The Jets were tested early when Isabella Corrao walked, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and then tried to score on a single by Kat Zabielski. Marissa San Antonio was up to the task though, as her throw nailed Corrao at the plate.

The Dalers got on the board first when Danielle Cutuli made a throwing error to begin the fourth. Two walks later, the bases were loaded, and Tori Kornfield's infield hit plated the first run, but Kerri Shapiro limited the damage and got two fly balls to end the inning.

"She showed real composure," East Meadow Coach Cindy McCarthy said. "That was big for us today. I am proud of the team."

East Meadow wasted no time responding, as Shapiro worked a long at-bat with one out in the home fourth and netted a single. West followed with her two-run shot to right to take a 2-1 lead. The Jets did not sit tight, though, as they added three more in the fifth. RBI singles by Danielle Cutuli, Taylor Conti and Rebecca Syers increased the lead to 5-1, and Shapiro cruised from there, retiring six of the last seven batters to face her.

Stranded runners were a theme throughout the game. The Dalers left nine runners on, while the Jets stranded six.

Shapiro allowed four hits and struck out five in the game. She walked five as well. Isabella Corrao, who started for Farmingdale, allowed five hits, while walking five and striking out eight.

"We lost one softball game," Farmingdale Coach Brandon Oppenheim said. "We need to make some adjustments and get ready for Thursday."

Now, since the two teams have split the first two, East Meadow and Farmingdale will face off Thursday at 4 p.m. with the winner being named Nassau County Class AA champion.

"I think we have a really good chance," West said. "We are a very good team."
