Farmingdale State Names New Coach

Brendan Twomey takes over as Rams men's basketball coach.

After a tumultuous offseason that saw perhaps the best player and coach in program history leave, Farmingdale State College has a new men’s basketball coach.

Centenary College Coach Brendan Twomey was been named the head coach at Farmingdale State, Athletic Director Michael Harrington announced Thursday. Twomey’s hiring restores some balance to a program that recently lost two iconic figures; one to graduation and the other to the NCAA Division II coaching ranks.

Erik Smiles, who spent nine seasons at Farmingdale State and won 182 games, was introduced as the coach at LIU Post on May 20.

Center A.J. Matthews, who has been working out for NBA teams, was a 1,000-point scorer and D-III All-American as a senior.

Twomey once starred for Skyline Conference rival Mount St. Mary, where he graduated with a degree in business administration in 2004. He was selected from among 40 candidates, 10 of whom were interviewed, according to Sports Information Director Deana Ward.
