Lacrosse Dominates St. Anthony's Signing Day

School recognizes 17 seniors who have committed to play sports in college.

In what has become a rite of passage at St. Anthony’s, a small army of student-athletes gathered in the South Huntington parochial school’s library Wednesday to announce the next step in their young lives.

The start of the week-long NCAA early signing period is hotly anticipated by basketball fans from Kentucky to Syracuse. But lacrosse is king on Long Island and this signing period includes lax stars too.

Lacrosse standouts dominated the event at St. Anthony’s – and rightfully so.

The girls lacrosse program won its fifth straight league title while the boys took home their fourth in a row. Both teams were nationally ranked.

Of the 17 seniors who signed national letters-of-intent (or, in the case of the Ivy League, reaffirmed their commitment) 12 will play lacrosse in college.

"Today is not just a day to recognize our student athletes, but also a day to honor your parents and family for their dedication to you," Athletic Director Don Buckley told the gathering of students and parents. "One can only imagine how many miles were driven and hours spent watching you grow from small children to the young adults you are today."

Kim Coughlan, an elite midfield, opted to be part of the new program at Michigan rather than join already-elite NCAA powers in Northwestern or Notre Dame.

“There’s going to be 28 freshman with me, which will be really awesome,” said Coughlan, of Port Jefferson. “That’ll be a new experience.”

All-Long Island basketball star Rebecca Musgrove, who led St. Anthony’s to back-to-back Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA titles, chose Brown. The Plainview native will be a four-year starter at point guard when the new season opens next month.

“Her numbers don’t do her justice because we have five players averaging double figures,” Friars Coach Ken Parham said.

Coach Keith Wieczorek said several boys lacrosse players will wait until February to sign, but six teammates made it official Wednesday.

“We have great kids,” Wieczorek said. “It’s a testament to the program and the quality of the kids we get.”
