Ragno Powers Farmingdale Lacrosse

After missing most of last two seasons, John Ragno scores 4 goals to help Farmingdale win Nassau Class A quarterfinal.

Senior John Ragno was fearless when the ball found its way to him. He charged into the teeth of the Hicksville defense, took the ferocious hits and fired shot after shot.

He was making up for lost time and that relentless drive proved to be enough.    Ragno took 15 shots and scored four goals to power No. 4 Farmingdale past No. 5 Hicksville, 6-5, Tuesday in a Nassau Class A boys lacrosse quarterfinal at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium.

The remarkable part is that injuries have kept Ragno off the field for the better part of two seasons. He missed his junior year with a broken ankle and a toe injury sidelined him for all but the last three games this spring.

“I missed three fourths of the season due to a broken toe and turf toe,” said Ragno, who will take his game to Army Prep next year. “This feels great. I feel like I’m back where I belong.”

Farmingdale (11-5) advances to the semifinals next Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Hofstra. The Dalers will face the East Meadow-Massapequa winner.

Ragno scored three times in the first half. His goal with 1:36 left sent the Dalers into halftime with a 4-3 edge.

“It was a big lift psychologically,” longtime Farmingdale Coach Bob Hartranft said. “It took some pressure off the other guys.”

After Pat McCormick forged a tie at 4 for Hicksville (7-9), the Dalers answered with back-to-back fourth-quarter goals by junior attack Chris Brown and Ragno.

“You can’t score if you don’t shoot,” Ragno said. “Eventually they’ll go in.”

Ragno was a difference-maker on faceoffs too, winning 10 of 14 in the X.

The defense buckled down from there. Junior goalie Andrew Muscarella made six saves for the Dalers.
