Rams Scoreboard: Teams Take Championships

Baseball, softball and tennis win conferences.

Highlights from this week's spring sports at include the baseball, softball, and men's tennis teams punching their tickets for the NCAA Division III tournament. Check back every Tuesday for this weekly report of game summaries.

Baseball

Farmingdale State 10, Old Westbury 1 (Skyline Championship): Mike Dolce held Old Westbury off the scoreboard in his 6.2 innings as the Rams won their fourth straight Skyline Conference Championship on Sunday. Kevin Curtis smacked two triples that brought in three RBI and three runs scored in being named the tournament MVP. Dolce allowed only four hits and two walks in the outing. Terrence Bohonan went 2-4 with a walk and scored three times.

Farmingdale State 11, Old Westbury 2 (Skyline Semifinals: CJ Bula pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run in improving his record to a perfect 6-0 and advancing the Rams to their fourth straight conference championship on Saturday. The game began as a pitchers duel until Farmingdale State broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth. Ryan Rubensteing went 2-5 with 2 RBI in a balanced effort where not other Ram had more than one RBI. Brandon Cruz went 2-4 with a walk and scored three runs. Old Westbury committed four errors, leading to four unearned runs.

Farmingdale State 4, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (Skyline Second Round): Chris Phelan pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out 11 in Farmingdale State's playoff opener on Friday. Bohonan opened the scoring in the third inning with a two out single that scored to runs. The Rams would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth from Thomas Butler and Danny DeVito. The Rams managed to make the most of their offense, scoring four runs on just five hits.

Softball

Farmingdale State 3, NYU-Poly 2 (Skyline Championship): Hope Zino allowed one earned run and five hits in leading the Rams to their second Skyline Conference Championship in the last three years on Sunday. Madison Snyder singled in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the third. All three Farmingdale State runs were unearned. Snyder and Nicole Farber had similar lines, each going 2-3 with and RBI and a run scored. Zino was named the tournament MVP, going 3-0, allowing 11 hits while striking out 20. She won her 20th game of the season, breaking Heather Buckshaw's record of 19 in 2008.

Farmingdale State 7, NYU-Poly 5 (Skyline Semifinals): Kristen Flint hit a two run triple to right in the sixth inning to give the Rams a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish in advancing to the championship game on Saturday. Flint went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Farber again had a good day at the plate, hitting 2-3 and scoring twice. Zino pitched the complete game, allowing five hits and four earned runs, while walking six and striking out a half dozen. The Rams avenge an earlier loss to NYU-Poly, one of their two conference losses this season.

Farmingdale State 4, Mount Saint Mary 0 (Skyline First Round): Zino threw her fifth one-hitter in the season, shutting down Mount Saint Mary in their playoff opener on Wednesday. Zino walked three and struck out nine in the outing, allowing the lone hit in the fourth inning. Jennifer Jarczynski hit her team-leading seventh homerun, a two-run shot in the sixth to give Farmingdale State some extra insurance. Snyder went 2-3 and scored two of the Rams runs.

Men's Tennis

Farmingdale State 5, Mount Saint Mary 2 (Skyline Championship): In just four years as a varsity sport, the men's tennis team won their first Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday. Playoff MVP Christian Borman topped Mount Saint Mary's top singles player 6-4, 6-1, and then paired up with Joe Passarella to win their doubles matchup 9-7. Chris Genzmann won his doubles match with Joseph Falcetta 8-4, and then won his singles match 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) to clinch the victory.

Farmingdale State 5, Purchase 3 (Skyline Semifinals): The Rams fell behind 2-1 early before Falcetta won his singles match to clinch a spot in the championship game. After winning both of his day's matchups, Falcetta upped his record to 12-1 in singles and 10-2 in doubles matches. Passarella was victorious in his singles match 6-0, 6-1

Men's Lacrosse 

Montclair State 9, Farmingdale State 7 (Skyline Championship): The Rams drop their first conference game of the season, their first loss in over a month, in the Skyline Championship on Saturday. Up by one, Montclair State scored the only goal in the third quarter and then added the opener of the fourth for an 8-5  advantage. The teams then traded goals with Jimmy Owsinski scoring with two seconds left for the final score. Wes Hubschmitt scored a hat trick and two assists for a game-high five points. Brian Nerney made 11 saves in the defeat. The last time the Rams lost a game was March 22 at Chris. Newport. The Rams finish the season at 10-5, the best record in program history.

Farmingdale State 7, Kean 6 (Skyline Semifinals): Farmingdale State jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but had to hold on late to advance to program's first Skyline Championship on Wednesday. Wes Hubschmitt netted the eventual game winner with 4:45 remaining to put the Rams up 7-5. With 1:15 left, Adolfo Arrieta cut the lead to 7-6 as Farmingdale State had to maintain possession to run out the clock. Brian Nerney made 11 saves against six goals. Tim Caden scored a goal and two assists for a team-high three points. Nick Angrisani scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Kean offense.

Women's Lacrosse

Ramapo 15, Farmingdale State 11 (Skyline Semifinals): The Roadrunners went on a 6-1 run in the second half to eliminate Farmingdale State on Friday. The Rams had cut the deficit to one at 7-6 before Ramapo went on the run that put the game out of reach. Justine Rothar scored a game-high five goals and added an assist for six points in the contest, however no other Ram had more than two. Courtney Cook made nine saves in the loss. Diana Silva made 13 saves for the Roadrunners. The Rams now wait to see if they receive a bid for the ECAC tournament.

Farmingdale State 16, Mount Saint Mary 3 (Skyline Quarterfinals): The Rams scored the first 12 goals of the game, shutting out their opponent for the first 41:10 on their way to a victory in the playoff opener on Tuesday. Midfielder Emily Williams scored six goals on seven shots while Rothar added two goals and two assists. Carly Schneider scored a hat trick and tacked on two assists for a five point performance. Farmingdale State outshot Mount Saint Mary 30-14.
