Rams Scoreboard: Zino Throws No Hitter

Baseball takes three of four, including extra inning thriller, and other spring sports updates.

Highlights from this week's spring sports at include Hope Zino's no hitter over Purchase, Patrick Delventhal's 11 saves in Saturday's lacrosse game against Vassar and the women's lacrosse team outshooting Bard 35-7. Check back every Tuesday for this weekly roundup of game summaries.

Softball:

Farmingdale State 13, Purchase 0: Hope Zino nearly pitched a second consecutive no hitter over Purchase, allowing just one hit in the fourth inning as the Rams (14-2, 4-0) took game two on Sunday. Jennifer Jarczynski hit three homeruns in four at bats. In hitting her first homeruns of the season, Jarczynski knocked in a season-high six RBI. Kirsten Flint went 2-3 with two runs and a pair of RBI. Zino improves to 9-0 with an ERA of 0.35, allowing just three earned runs all season.

Farmingdale State 19, Purchase 0: Hope Zino pitched a no hitter over five innings in game one on Sunday. Zino capped off her strong week with the gem, striking out 11 and walking none. The Rams committed two errors to eliminate the perfect game opportunity. Zino struck out the first five batters before the sixth fouled out. Purchase didn't put a ball in play until the third inning. Aubrey Walker had a huge game at the plate going 3-for-4 with her first two home runs of the year, five RBI and four runs. 

Farmingdale State 7, Sage 2: Heather Buckshaw scattered four hits and two runs, both unearned, over four innings to pick up her fifth win of the season in game two on Saturday. The Rams scored three in the first and added another three spot in the third. Walker went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Farmingdale State 8, Sage 3: Zino struck out 13 and allowed zero unearned runs in leading the Rams to victory in game one on Saturday. Farmingdale State was up 1-0 when they tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sage answered with three of their own before Madison Snyder hit a two run home run to put the game out of reach. Snyder had three RBI in the contest while Kaitlin Keenan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Zino's 13 strikeouts were two off her career best.

Farmingdale State 12, Merchant Marine 2: The Rams scored five runs in the bottom of the first to keep Merchant Marine winless this season in game two on Tuesday. Leftfielder Madison Snyder hit a double and a triple, scoring three runs and knocking in an RBI in going 2-for-3 at the plate. Heather Buckshaw earned her fourth win of the season, allowing four hits and one earned run over five innings. The Rams hit six doubles in the contest.

Farmingdale State 11, Merchant Marine 0: Zino pitched another gem, striking out 13 of the 17 batters who faced her and carried a no hitter until there were two outs in the fifth inning in game one on Tuesday. The Rams scored three runs in each of the first three innings to put this one away early. Farber went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kristen Flint also collected two hits, knocking in two runs. Zino's final line was one hit, zero runs, zero walks, and thirteen strikeouts in five innings.

Men's Lacrosse

Farmingdale State 7, Vassar 5: Patrick Delventhal made 11 saves, allowing a season low five goals in the victory on Saturday. Down 2-1 early, the Rams (3-4) scored four unanswered to take control of the game. Wes Hubschmitt took care of the scoring burden, netting three goals and an assist. Shannon Robinson added a goal and an assist. Delventhal was down considerably from his goals against average of 12.44.

Christopher Newport 13, Farmingdale State 8:  The Captains opened the game scoring four goals in the first quarter and denied the Rams their chance to even their record on Tuesday. After falling behind, the Rams hung with their opponent but were not able to cut into the deficit. Jimmy Owsinski had two goals and two assists while Hubschmitt had a goal and three assists. Rob Koster scored four goals and three assists to lead Christopher Newport.  The Rams were outshot 48-29.

Women's Lacrosse

Vassar 20, Farmingdale State 18: Down 13-12 soon after halftime, Vassar exploded for eight straight goals to take down the Rams on Monday. Farmingdale State rallied for five straight scores of their own, but still came up short. Sarah Warner set a single-game record for Vassar with nine goals and added two assists. Justine Rothar was the high scorer for the Rams with six goals and two assists. Emily Williams also had a big game scoring five times. The Rams were outshot 43-26 in the game.

Farmingdale State 18, Bard 1: After allowing a goal in the first fifteen minutes, the Rams went on a 15-0 run that shut the opponents out for the final 45:37 in a blowout victory on Saturday. It took just thirty seconds for Farmingdale State to jump on top when Jillian Pironti scored for the first time this season. Justine Rothar had her biggest game of the season, scoring five goals and assisting on six more for a total of 11 points. Midfielder Emily Williams scored five times. The Rams outshot Bard 35-7 in the contest. Courtney Cook made five saves while allowing just the single goal.

Baseball

Farmingdale State 6, Purchase 3: The Rams struck early with two runs in the first and then added three more in the fourth to take game two on Sunday. Purchase scored two to tie the score in the top of the third before Farmingdale State added their trio of runs. Drew Dallanegra got the final out, striking out Purchase's last chance with the tying run at the plate. David Zilnicki went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Frank Scarlato also went 2-for-3, scoring once.

Purchase 8, Farmingdale State 1: The Rams were held to one run and six hits, snapping their three game win streak on Sunday. It was a pitching duel for the first five innings until Purchase broke through for three runs in the sixth. Any hope of a Ram comeback was halted when Purchase scored four times in the top of the ninth. Pitcher Vinny Messana struck out ten in his six innings of work, but took the loss. Thomas Butler went 2-for-3 and scored Farmingdale State's only run.

Farmingdale State 7, Old Westbury 5 (11 innings): With two on and two out in the top of the 11th, Zilnicki came up with the big hit, a double to left center to clear the bases and give the Rams the win. It was Zilnicki's first hit of the game in five at bats. Farmingdale State's bullpen kept Old Westbury off the scoreboard for the final five innings, allowing just two hits. Terrence Bohonan went 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Farmingdale State 6, Old Westbury 0: Chris Phelan pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits and zero walks while striking out eight in game one on Saturday. The Rams were held off the scoreboard until breaking through with an unearned run in the fifth inning.  The went on to add to their total in each of the remaining innings. Leftfielder Ryan Rubenstein had the big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, and a pair of stolen bases.
