Women's Basketball Pounds Purchase, 93-66

Farmingdale State Rams return to winning ways.

The came into Tuesday’s game looking to get back into winning form against the Purchase Panthers, after coming off a convincing loss to the Mount Saint Mary Knights last week. They easily accomplished that mission, beating the Panthers 93-66.

The Rams (8-4, 6-2) scored their second highest point total this year, while keeping Purchase (3-7, 3-3) at bay for most of the first half.

Turning Point: Tied at 15 with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half, Jeanette Zubizarreta hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the arc, to break the deadlock. Zubizarreta would hit another two treys in the half, on what would turn out to be an eventual 33-5 run, to end the first half.

Heroes: It was a balanced attack from the Rams, with only 4 starters in double figures, but 13 players sharing in the scoring. Farmingdale was lead by Zubizarreta and junior guard Kayla Koch with 14 points each.  Credit also goes to the Rams hustling press, which held the Panthers to just 5 points for the last 11 minutes of the first half.

Quotable:  On scoring 91 points, coach Chris Mooney said, “We’re just looking to score some easy baskets. That’s what we’re trying to do every game. Today we started finishing a little better, and we’re getting a little better every day. On his team: “We added a couple new players in January – Jalicia Connell and Keona Jones. We’re looking for everything to come together for them [in the second half of the season].”

Bottom Line: The Rams look to be back on track. The team obviously took a look in the mirror after the trouncing they received last week and responded with confidence and determination.

Who’s Next: The Rams play at the Eagles of St. Joseph’s on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Key Stats:

Zubizzareta: 4-9, 14 points, 2 rebounds
Koch: 5-11, 14 points, 6 rebounds.
