Farmingdale's Memorial Day: What's Opened, Closed

Today is set aside to remember the nation's war dead.

Monday, May 27, is Memorial Day, a national holiday set aside to honor the nation's war dead.

Farmingdale's traditional parade steps off at 10 a.m. on the usual route. The forecast is for clear skies and temperatures in the 70s.

Here's what's opened and closed:

  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed (no meetings; but national, state and local parks are open.) There is no town garbage pickup today; collection is delayed one day. Emergency services are on call around the clock, as always.
  • Post offices: Closed; express delivery only.
  • Schools: Closed.
  • Banks, stock markets and other financial institutions: Closed.
  • Retail stores: Liquor stores, diners, supermarkets and convenience stores are mostly open; some operate on limited hours.
Farmingdale's annual Memorial Day Parade, steps off at 10 a.m. from Bethpage Road and runs along Main Street into downtown, ending at the Farmingdale Village Green. The long-time Farmingdale tradition honor the men and women who have died to preserve the nation's freedom.

A broad cross-section of community organizations, youth groups, bands and Fire Service members will take part. After the parade, a solemn service will be held in front of Farmingdale Fire Department Headquarters to honor the nation's war dead.
