My Take on Gay Marriage

Why the New York State Senate approving the Marriage Equality Act was a no-brainer in my mind.

A few weeks back, the New York State Senate approved the , making New York the largest state in the nation to allow gay marriage. The Senate gave its stamp of approval to same sex marriages two years after it rejected it by a wide margin.

I've always wondered what the big hub-bub was about denying gays the right to marry. What really is the big deal? I understand the Catholic argument, but marriage is not necessarily about God. It's about two people who love and care about one another wanting to be bound together in the eyes of society forever (or at least until death or divorce).

I am under the impression that there is supposed to be a separation between Church and State in America, which means that legislators can disagree with gay marriage based on religious beliefs but can't block a state law based on those beliefs.

Do you agree? If you take the God component out of marriage then why can't two people who love each other regardless of gender be legally bound to each in marriage (civil union if the term marriage is too strong of a link to God)?

Remember this is my opinion. I would love to hear your opinion, but this one is mine and I am entitled to it.
