The School Budget Passed. Now What?

A few thoughts, suggestions and mild rant about the Farmingdale budget.

I voted "no" last night and quite a few others did too, but it was not enough to force the Farmingdale Board of Ed to come up with a better plan for the school system than to raise our already high school taxes and cut the program.

Am I disappointed? Yes, because I feel that once again more money is being thrown at group of fiscally irresponsible people who are not held accountable.

I've only been a Farmingdale resident for five years and this is the first year that I have really taken an interest in school politics, since my oldest will be entering into the system in 2013.  But now that my interest is peaked, there are a lot of questions the School Board needs to answer for me, namely what are they going to do to:

A. Bring back cut programs.

B. Reduce overhead costs.

C. Provide transparency to spending (I want a detailed budget to actual spending report).

D. Provide better meeting/budget minutes information.

E. Get parents more involved, like a think tank or getting parents to donate time/goods for the betterment of the school district. (I don't have much but I will do near anything to help my kids succeed.)

If I am going to be taxed through the nose then I feel I deserve to know where every penny is going.

What are your thoughts on how to make the Farmingdale School District (or any school district) better for both the students and our pockets?

Also does anyone know what you have to do become a member of the Board of Ed and what the job responsibilities?

Remember this is my opinion. I would love to hear your opinion, but this one is mine and I am entitled to it.
