About 1,500 people turned out for the sixth annual Walk Like MADD event Saturday at .
Relatives and friends of those killed by drunk drivers walked in teams or singly to raise money for MADD Long Island and its efforts to support people about the dangers of drunken driving. Teams came from around Long Island, upstate New York and New Jersey, while other participants came from Georgia and Florida.
Among the volunteers was Marielle Garvey of Plainview, who despite a broken leg, walked one length of the route. Marielle, who said her leg developed a hairline fracture for unknown reasons, said she was participating in the walk as a bat mitzah project and "because I am so against drunken driving."
Shoes representing those killed by drunken drivers lined both edges of a sidewalk.
Another large team gathered to honor the memory of Suffolk County Second Precinct Police Officer Glen Ciano, who was killed on duty in 2009 by a drunken driver.
After the walk, participants gathered to talk, listen to music while children played with balloons or scampered about.
